How We’re Working With Primary Care Centres To Offer Exceptional Levels Of Care

Since 2014, we’ve helped to relieve the strain placed on primary care sites and to offer thousands of patients across the country exceptional levels of care. We serve GP practices, walk-in clinics and urgent care centres by providing them with finance, recruitment, payroll and IT services.

We’re passionate about improving efficiency within practices by giving GPs time to do what they do best – work closely with patients. We’re also enthusiastic about furthering medical professionals’ skills so they can continue to offer a life changing standard of care and benefit from the workplace satisfaction so often associated with learning and development.

So when Health Investor UK magazine approached our CEO Richard Power for an interview, he leapt at the chance to tell our story and explain how we’re working together to ease the strain placed on the primary care sector.

“Change is all about people,” Power explained in the interview.

“To get to different models of care you have to get people to come with you, and that’s difficult, especially when you have GPs who have been providing services all their life in one way. That was fine when funding levels were at a certain level, but now that they’re lower and things are a little more difficult, it doesn’t work.”

The inspiration for IMH’s mission came from Power’s admiration for the NHS along with a strong desire to protect the service. He said: “I found it amazing, but it was also quite obvious that there was a huge need for change – and to protect it. We saw the opportunity in a sector that hadn’t been modernised and was still working very much as a separate cottage industry, and we felt like we had the people around us who could do it.”

He added: “Since our launch in 2014, we have been focused on what’s been driving the breaking point that primary care is currently at. And a lot of that is around shortage of clinicians and efficiency. For example, doctors doing a lot of admin work that they just shouldn’t be doing.”

When a GP practice joins our network, our clinical partners will work with the existing team to improve clinical and operational performance. We place strong emphasis on making the most of everyone’s skillset and therefore delegate each task to the right person.

We can help to place pharmacists, locum GPs and advanced nurse practitioners within a practice to further improve the existing level of care. They’ll take on the very tasks that are often delivered by doctors unnecessarily. When a doctor has spent several years training for their profession, it makes little sense to burden them with irrelevant tasks that could be picked up by other members of staff.

We also provide practices with physician associates in their final year at university. Not only can they help to relieve the pressure on existing practice staff, they’ll also gain an insight into the way primary care operates. Such experience can be invaluable to medical students, and research suggests it can often be the difference between a career in a general practice and a role in a different area of medicine.  With the health service battling an ongoing skills shortage and recruitment struggle, getting talented students into the profession is half the battle.

Medical students in the early stages of their career aren’t the only ones learning on the job. With our help, more experienced members of staff can benefit from on-site training and days specifically ring-fenced for study and research time.
