A GP’s Guide To Southampton

Situated on England’s south coast, Southampton is a vibrant port city in Hampshire. Full of exciting opportunities for the young and old alike, it’s perfect for those wishing to enjoy the perks of a bustling city along with the peaceful benefits of living by the sea.

If you’re ready for a change and you’d like to immerse yourself in a challenging but career-changing role in general practice, one of our Southampton practices could be for you.

Bath Lodge Practice

We are looking for GPs to join our Bath Lodge team in one of Southampton’s most popular suburbs. Situated just a stone’s throw away from the city centre, our Bath Lodge practice is perfect for those wishing to develop their career. You’ll be helping other members of staff support more than 11,000 patients and offer exceptional standards of care. There’s a fantastic community-feel to the clinic, with GPs, practice nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, midwives, councillors, receptionists and managers working together to ensure patients’ expectations are exceeded.

The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 18:30, though it is closed one afternoon each month for training purposes.

There’s a strong focus on training and development across the practice, with each GP receiving the equivalent of one week off each year for continual professional training. Therefore, this is an ideal environment for doctors looking to expand their skills and excel in general practice.

Chessel Practice

Like Bath Lodge Practice, our Chessel Practice is also not too far from the city centre. It has an eclectic mix of staff members with a diverse range of specialties including GPs, practice nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, HCAs and phlebotomists.

There’s also a full non-clinical team made up of clinical support officers, medical secretaries, administrators and receptionists. We know how important it is for you to have time to do what you do best, which is why paperwork and admin is delegated to the right people.

The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 18:30, but it is closed one afternoon each month for training purposes.

We firmly believe that the best GPs are the ones who are given the opportunity to continuously grow and develop, which is why we offer ongoing training and support at Chessel Practice. Each GP receives the equivalent of one week off each year for professional training.

Whether you’re looking to rent or buy, there’s a diverse choice of properties across Southampton. Unlike other areas in the south of the country, prices tend to be more affordable. Last year, the average semi-detached property in Bitterne sold for an average of £249,757 . Meanwhile, detached properties sell for an average of £291,143 and flats are worth £136,420.

Bitterne’s overall average asking price of £225,438 is similar to those in Bitterne Park (£228,008) and Southampton (£233,710) but more expensive than Sholing (£211,325).

Things to do

For a city, there’s a tremendous amount of greenery in Southampton. Southampton Common alone includes 326 acres of woodland and open spaces, including its own wildlife centre.

If you’re the outdoors type, you’ll also love the Outdoor Sports Centre, Riverside Park, and Weston Shore. There are countless cycling and walking routes, making it easy to switch off and relax when you’re not in the surgery. You could even take a trip to the Isle of Wight thanks to the city’s ferry services.

Budding historians can get a taste of what it was to like in Southampton many centuries ago, thanks to the city’s medieval town walls, the Norman-era St Michael’s Church, Tudor House, and Mayflower monument.

Fans of the West End will love The Mayflower Theatre as it has a reputation for attracting some of the biggest shows. The O2 Guildhall is the place for huge performers while smaller venues like The Joiners, 1865 and The Brook are perfect for those wishing to spot the next big thing.

Southampton has an excellent education system and Southampton University is on the doorstep of our clinics. If you have young children, you’re likely to be impressed by the standard of primary and secondary schools in close proximity to the surgery.

Southampton’s blessed with an excellent transport system including buses, trains and coaches. There are rail links to London and the south west, along with motorway connections to the capital and the south via the M27 and M3.
